Gear supports the game—and safer participation
Ice hockey equipment commonly includes a certified helmet, mouthguard where required, shoulder and elbow protection, gloves, protective pants, shin guards, skates, a stick, and a jersey. Goaltenders use additional specialized protection because they face shots directly.
Fit, condition, league rules, and supervision all matter. A player should not assume that gear makes every collision or fall harmless; safer decisions also involve instruction, rink rules, and appropriate pace for the group. The safety and gear guide offers a closer look at those practical questions.
For players encountering a different version of the sport, it helps to recognize that field hockey’s surface and equipment differ substantially from ice hockey, and inline or street hockey may use wheels and a ball or puck rather than skates and an ice surface.
